Buathong Sticky Waterfall

Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall

BuaTong waterfall and Jedsee Fountain Forest Park is one of the famous and attractive tourist destinations in Chiang Mai Province. The park is situated in Mae Taeng National Forest Reserve, village no. 8, Mae Ho Phra sub-district, Mae Taeng district, Chiang Mai Province. The landscape of Buatong Waterfall and Jedsee Fountain Forest Park is mountain alternating with valley and brook. It is located on a height of around 400-900 meters above mean sea level. Around Buatong Waterfall and Jedsee Fountain are a plain and a pan-shaped valley. The forest is abundant, cool, and pleasant. Since a lot of large trees grow densely, the forest can be both rain forest and mixed forest with many view points.

The porous limestone rocks of Bua Thong possess a rare quality – they’re astonishingly “sticky.” This allows visitors to climb directly up the waterfall without slipping, a phenomenon that has made it an internationally renowned attraction. Surrounded by lush forest and vibrant flora, the Sticky Waterfall is a must-visit attraction for anyone visiting Chiang Mai. The waterfall is composed of multiple tiers, each of which offers a different climbing experience. The tiers can be climbed entirely at your own pace, with lower levels offering a gentle introduction to climbing while higher sections provide a more challenging ascent.

As far as I know, these falls are the only place where you can safely walk through the cascade, from level to level. There are four levels. Park authorities have fixed ropes to facilitate walking from level to level. Young and old visitors use these to enjoy the refreshing experience of hiking the falls. The surface of the cascades is tufa, which is a kind of limestone. I am not a chemist but I understand that certain minerals from room temperature water create this kind of limestone. It is chalky and not slippery.

Apart from this, the setting of this waterfall is very beautiful and peaceful. It is about three kilometers from the main road so it is very quiet. Park authorities control the area around the waterfall so there are no rowdy scenes with people abusing alcohol and so on. This and the fact that the waterfall is safe to visit make it an ideal destination for families with kids.
