Chiang Rai

Often called the “quiet sister” to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai is Thailand’s northernmost province and a haven for travelers seeking a mix of avant-garde art, misty mountain landscapes, and deep historical roots. Founded in 1262, it was the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom, and today it serves as a sophisticated cultural hub that feels more intimate and relaxed than its southern neighbors.

Chiang Rai is famous for three iconic structures that challenge traditional Thai temple architecture: The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun): A surreal, snow-white masterpiece covered in tiny mirrors that sparkle in the sun. It represents the path to enlightenment through unconventional, contemporary art. The Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten): Known for its sapphire-blue interior and gold-trimmed sculptures, this temple is a visual explosion of modern Thai design. The Black House (Baan Dam Museum): A dark, moody complex created by artist Thawan Duchanee. It features over 40 structures housing a collection of animal remains and tribal artifacts, exploring themes of life and death.

Beyond the city limits, the terrain shifts into rolling hills and lush tea plantations: The Golden Triangle: Stand at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers, the famous spot where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. Tea Plantations: Visit Choui Fong or Doi Mae Salong for endless rows of emerald-green tea bushes, fresh oolong tastings, and stunning mountain views. Phu Chi Fa: For the adventurous, a sunrise hike here offers a “sea of mist” view that is widely considered one of the most beautiful in Thailand.
